MMP - Keyboard Tricks

MMP - Keyboard Tricks

We can all use a refresher, even for those of you who are hardcore. I’m offering some keyboard tricks and tips for today’s MMP.

Have you closed a tab accidently? Try pressing CTRL + SHIFT + T or Cdm + SHIFT + T on a Mac to reopen the closed tab.

CTRL + Z will undo a file that’s been deleted or moved and puts it right back to its original location.
The easiest way to Subscript is to highlight a word or letter and hit CTRL and the "+ =" key.

Superscript highlight the word or letter and hit CTRL + Shift and the "+=" key.
Need to view your system information quickly, press the Windows Key + Pause/Break key and a system information panel will open on the screen.

I right click a lot during day, there is a better way. Select anything in a document and press the menu key (it's the key located next to the Windows key). The right click context menu will magically appear on the screen.
Rename a file by pressing F2 when the file is selected.

CTRL + Shift + V will paste the text from any source into plain text (Cdm + Shift + V on a Mac) – no formatting!

The Library Files - Canada 150

The Library Files - Canada 150

We decided to create a display in the library to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The display includes feature sheets on some notable Brantfordtonians such as Lawren Harris, Thayendanega (Joseph Brant), Arthur Sturgis Hardy, and Walter Allward.

Fact sheets also make up the display and highlight our various birthdays
  • 1892 and Canada’s First Criminal Code SC 1892, c 29 [assented to 9th July, 1892]
  • 1917 The Income Tax War Act SC 1917, c 28 [Assented to 20th September, 1917] A “temporary” measure to help pay for Canada’s involvement in World War I.
  • 1967 the year in which the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism released its first report calling for a fully bilingual country.
The small side table features some information on the Charter and includes a list of the top 5 facts. The library has the British North America Act, 1867, 30-31 Vict., c. 3 (U.K.) An Act for the Union of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, and the Government thereof; and for Purposes connected therewith. [29th March 1867]. The text on display is from the sheriff’s office, and is dated 25th of June 1868.

Also located on the table, 100 hundred years forward, is a case from the Ontario Reports, Atwell et al. v. Knights, [1967] 1 O.R. 419, High Court of Justice. The defendant, Knights, operated a caged hen-laying business in the village of Tavistock. The plaintiffs in the case lived within 1,000 feet of the operation, and as you might expect provided evidence as to the unavoidable smell. The Court decided that the offensive smell emanating from the hen-houses was a nuisance and granted an injunction against the defendant. The case is even referenced in two volumes of Halsbury’s Laws of Canada. If you have a chance, drop by the library to read the judgment, just for the interesting use of language.

We invite you to visit and see the display. Take a pin, a temporary maple leaf tattoo, a maple leaf cookie or a flag. While you are here don’t forget to drop your business card in the ballot box to win one of three birthday prizes - A short book of bad Judges, Law is a buyer’s market: building a client-first law firm; and for those of you with a sweet tooth, a tin of maple cream chocolates.

Happy Birthday Canada!

The Library Files - InfoLocate

The Library Files - InfoLocate

You're all familiar with the library catalogue AdvoCAT, but what if I told you there was another option. Brought to you by the LSUC | Great Library, InfoLocate lets you search for books, journals, online CPD articles, e-books, e-journals, and websites. When searching you can refine your results to a resource type, subject, author, library, and publication date.

I think one of the best features of this discovery tool is that you can you see how many items any given library has on a particular subject area. The other nice feature is that search results for a text, in most cases, will display the book cover.

InfoLocate also contains the full text of all the individual LSUC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) articles since 2004, that's over 6,000+ CPD articles. The articles that are 18 months or older are free to download, and print. Online access to the newer articles (post 18 months) is available, and so is a pdf download option (secured view - no printing).

Articles from CPD programs can also be found on AccessCLE. Articles older than 18 months are free. More recent articles cost between $25 and $35.

The LSUC CPD materials offer a great starting point for any research project, but also provide practical advice from experts in the field.
